Addictions Therapist, Award-Winning Author, TEDx Speaker – Candace Plattor, M.A.

Tell us a little something about your business...

Candace Plattor, M.A., is an Addictions Therapist specializing in working with the family of people who are struggling with addiction. As a former addict herself with over 35 years clean and sober, Candace has recovered from her own 15-year opioid addiction which occurred as a result of the very addictive medications prescribed by her doctors for Crohn’s Disease.

As the CEO of Love With Boundaries, Candace and her team of highly skilled counsellors work with both the family members and the addicts they love. Candace knows that overcoming addiction is a family condition: everyone in the family is affected by addiction and everyone needs to heal.

Candace’s award-winning book, “Loving an Addict, Loving Yourself: The Top 10 Survival Tips for Loving Someone with an Addiction,” provides strategies that families can put into place immediately, and has been translated into several languages. Because she and her team work primarily on Zoom, they are able to work with clients world-wide. When was your lightbulb moment?

My biggest lightbulb moment came when I began to think about the possibility of ending my own life. As a young woman struggling with the painful and debilitating illness of Crohn’s disease, and as an addict in the throes of opioid addiction, I was feeling very hopeless, depressed and alone. I knew I had enough pills to kill myself and knew that I could time it so that no one would find me before they kicked in. I was aware that I had to make the most important decision of my life – was I going to live or was I going to die? As I picked up the phone to call our local Crisis Line, instead of picking up the pills, I could finally see that I did indeed have some self-respect and resiliency – and that was the beginning of my recovery from addiction and a much better life for myself going forward.

What are your three words of advice?

Never give up!

Even when it looks and feels like everything is hopeless, we are at choice about how to handle that. I love the saying “If you’re going through hell, keep going!” If we don’t keep going, if we give up, we just stay stuck in hell – and the reality is that no one has to do that. We can make a different choice at any point.

Three words of advice...

My advice is 3 words plus 2 more… If nothing changes, nothing changes.
