We share entrepreneurial stories to inspire great ideas...
JL Schwartz
My love of art began in preschool when my mother signed me up for classes at the Tampa Museum of Art. Although I have had other careers, that love of art has never faded and I continued to develop my art skills via formal training and experimentation. Initially, the focus of my art was realism and impressionism. However, several years ago I made the switch over to abstract. My artwork has garnered international awards and has been selected for publication in a number of printed and digital magazines and an art book. My website is https://jlschwartzart.com/

Tell us a little something about your business...
My business is the creation of abstract art that is mysterious and thought-provoking yet visually pleasing.
I am an artist who focuses on abstract artwork created on wood panels, canvas and paper using acrylic paint, mediums, water soluble pencils and for mixed media pieces a variety of found items. My most recent mixed media series is called “Finding Our Way”. The inspiration for this series started with two words from a magazine article: “right path”. From there I created pieces related to the concept of selecting the right path—one that enables us to shape our future and lead us to a better place than the path we’re currently following. We may have a road map to reach our goal, or we may embark on a path based on a series of choices, stacked one upon the other, as we move forward in our lives.
When was your lightbulb moment?
I have had many lightbulb moments, However, the one that started me on my path to create award-winning mixed media pieces was when I created my first collage piece on a cradled wood panel. Although, it was nice as is, after looking at it I thought, wow, this could be so much better if I used acrylic paint to bring it all together and provide more depth and interest. That piece was awarded Honorable Mention by Katherine Chang Lui in Artists Magazine annual competition. The following year another piece was awarded First Place.
What are your three words of advice?
My advice will extend beyond three words: Do what you love.! The minute you no longer enjoy what you are doing or the path you are on change it. You will get more satisfaction and success from your endeavors when you love what you are doing.
Three words of advice...
Do what you love! (I know it is more than three words ;-))
