Tell us a little something about your business...
Pollinate Mentoring Software creates new connections, increases engagement, improves knowledge transfer and enables people to attain important outcomes.
Mentoring solutions engage people so they feel aware, aligned, and productive. Our proprietary mentor matching software Cross-Pollinate AIâ„¢ enables you to gather relevant information on: experiences, expertise, goals, competencies, and preferences. We then pair it with our proprietary psychometric tool, the Knowledge Transfer Index (KTI), which is designed specifically to balance collaboration styles. This enables Pollinate to deliver a predictive system for creating successful learning pairs, groups, and teams.
Our mission is to connect people with purpose, in a fair and insightful way. We know learning partnerships succeed most often when people have light support to get started and stay on track. We continue to work on setting mentoring pairs and collaborative learning groups up for success through intelligent matching and elegant program management. As people in the workplace seek to reconnect within their organizations and through their networks, we are working to create different options for the learner experience and for using the data for organizational insights and improvements.
When was your lightbulb moment?
I got to be the organizational development consultant at the healthcare center where I lived. It was a really challenging and exciting time, so many things to learn, use some of the skills I had, and I had to build a whole bunch more really fast. Mentoring was my only way through it. My boss left, leaving me in the acting director role. This meant for a very young manager, managing for the first time unionized staff and a budget. I was young and dedicated. I think I did some things well, but I still really lacked context for how this management role was supposed to work. I was so fortunate that some of them took the time to really invest interest in me. People who spent time with me and weren’t really invested in the outcomes necessarily, but really wanted to see me succeed. This was as a blend of social support and knowledge transfer, that really worked and made a huge difference to what I was able to do in that role. And I was hooked on mentoring from then on.
What are your three words of advice?
1. Relentlessness: Be relentless at getting a product/market fit. It takes time, patience, research, intuition, and testing. Once you know who you’re building for, everything gets easier.
2. Stewardship: Know your finances in detail. As you get bigger this may not mean signing your own cheques but you need to know what’s coming in and going out all the time. Finances are not the only thing that matters but being a good steward of resources means that your business will be sustainable.
3. Purpose: The world needs saving so figure out which part of the solution you want to be and get being it. Motivation dissipates quickly if we aren’t attached to a purpose outside of ourselves.
Three words of advice...
1. Mentorship: Get a mentor. 2. Fellowship: Join a peer group. 3. Discernment: Find what works for you
