Tell us a little something about your business...
I’m Susan Houston. I’m a speaker, coach, and the founder of the Done Pretending podcast. I left a 19-year career to pursue my passion, from lived experiences. My work sits at the intersection of self-trust, judgment, and identity—especially for people who’ve been successful on paper but quietly disconnected from themselves. I help people stop performing who they think they should be and start living who they actually are. I’m preparing for a TEDx talk in 2026, which is incredibly exciting because it distills my core message: that perfectionism and self-doubt are often learned behaviors—not personality traits.
I’m also continuing to grow Done Pretending, expanding my speaking work, and developing deeper conversations around judgment, identity, and self-trust—especially in leadership and cultural spaces.
I will be published in a collaborative book in mid 2026, focusing on improving business and leadership, along with releasing my own full length book called, “The Silent Jury.”
When was your lightbulb moment?
My lightbulb moment happened about ten years ago. I was nine years into an executive administrative role and had helped my friend—who was also my boss—build a highly successful CPA firm. He was smart, strategic, and respected.
Then, in one team meeting, I watched him hesitate.
Not because he lacked vision.
Not because he didn’t have the answer.
He paused because he was waiting for consensus. He was bracing for judgment that never actually came—but he fully expected it.
In that moment, I realized something important: leadership doesn’t break down from a lack of intelligence. It breaks down from a fear of disapproval.
He had learned early on that success meant approval—earned through performance—not through wisdom, experience, or bold thinking. That hesitation alone cost the firm hundreds of thousands of dollars.
That was the moment I understood how deeply judgment—real or imagined—can silence even the most capable leaders.
What are your three words of advice?
Drop The Performance
We pretend to be someone else’s version of ourselves, and we must learn to trust our voice again. We must learn to lean into our true purpose, without fear of disapproval. I lived 50 years of my life being someone that I ultimately did not even recognize. It took me looking deep within, and learning the scientific background as to why this happened…. but more importantly, how to unlearn it.
