Tell us a little something about your business...
I’m an artist from Grimsby, Ontario, and I have been creating music for 4 years now. My journey began when I decided that I wanted to record a handful of songs I had written. I quickly realized that my 17-year-old self could not afford to record in a proper studio and so I decided to buy my own inexpensive equipment. In the beginning, all that I owned was an interface and a condenser mic (which cost me about $200). This lead to me slowly teaching myself how to engineer, mix, and produce music. Over the years I have collected more and more equipment and currently have a fully functional studio in my bedroom. I now find that I actually enjoy doing everything by myself as it gives me complete creative control. I can record what I want, when I want, how I want.
When was your lightbulb moment?
I’ve been playing guitar and singing for 12 years and have always loved music. I guess my lightbulb moment came through my love for DIY artists such as Charlotte Day Wilson, Mac Demarco, and Bon Iver. These artists had been creating music in their homes with equipment that was accessible to me so I figured if they can do it, so can I. Of course, this came with a lot of frustration as I had to teach myself everything using Youtube videos, how-to books, and online forums. Recording music by myself can make me feel proud and capable, and at other times frustrated and defeated, but I still can’t imagine doing it another way.
What are your three words of advice?
Believe in yourself. These words are extremely important to me because you can’t expect others to believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself and your own success first.
