Danuta Niton
Danuta is a multi-disciplinary artist and the founder of Art of Design, a creative studio that specializes in graphic design and printing. She is an active member within Hamilton’s Art communities and her studio is a permanent location for the Dundas Studio Tour. Her work ranges from smaller scale watercolours to large scale acrylic paintings and murals. Her latest project, ‘My Walks’ of Art’, began during the first phase of Covid-19, when she would walk and explore her hometown, using her time in quarantine to sketch the beautiful homes around Dundas. Tell us a little something about your business...
My story begins in Poland, where I grew up and completed my studies in Commercial Art and Advertising before setting my roots in Canada, over 30 years ago. Upon my immigration to Canada, I continued to expand my studies, taking numerous additional art courses at the Dundas Valley School of Art, Art Gallery of Hamilton, and Mohawk College.
My education led me to become a Graphic Designer, but my creative mind was always wandering which led me to explore many other facets of art – dabbling in painting, drawing, pyrography, window art, and mural creation.
When was your lightbulb moment?
During the recession of ’92, I lost my job as Assistant Art Director and was left scrambling to figure out my next move. I realized I wanted to find a way to create work for myself. I thus started my own business, because, as a single parent, I needed a job with a flexible schedule that could fit work around the needs of my, then, small children. I was tired of being beholden to the 9 to 5 work day and wanted to be own boss.
What are your three words of advice?
Courage: Don’t be afraid to try new things, push forward. Don’t limit yourself, be open to new opportunities and step out of your comfort zone (that’s where the magic happens!). In order to succeed you have to have the courage to fail.
Believe: Value yourself and your work. Recognize the power that is within you – there will always be people that want to help you.
Adapt: Create your own opportunities. If one door closes, go find another one. Change is inevitable, and as an immigrant, single parent, and entrepreneur, I had to be flexible and keep an open-mind to achieve my goals and pursue my dreams.
