Roxanne Tate
I am a Professional Engineer, Certified Passive House Designer, Certified Energy Manager and hold a Master of Applied Science in Engineering. In 2012 I found Tate Engineering Inc. out of a desire to do my part to fight climate change and out of a need for a more flexible life arrangement. When I’m not building the business I’m either cheering my children from the sidelines or enjoying some quality time in nature. www.tateengineering.com & www.airtightspaces.com

Tell us a little something about your business...
Tate Engineering Inc. is an engineering and project/construction management consulting firm that defines and solves complex issues related to facility development and operations. We work with owners, operators and developers across Atlantic Canada who see the value and need to operate more sustainably. Our focus is high performance buildings. For clients with existing buildings we look at ways to reduce operating costs and green house gas emissions. This can include different technologies, implementing energy management policies, or optimizing processes or systems. For new builds we seek to reach the highest performance level the budget will allow and educate clients on the whole lifecycle cost of our buildings.
When was your lightbulb moment?
From a young age I knew I wanted a career that would have a positive impact on the world. My strengths in math and science led me to Dalhousie university where I studied engineering and followed that us with a Masters of Applied Science in Engineering. While working with biodiesel fuels my passion for environmental stewardship grew. Several years later, while working in research and development in the window manufacturing field, I discovered how energy efficiency could help me fulfill my long-term career goals. Hence the creation of Tate Engineering.
What are your three words of advice?
1. Define your values and stick to them. My values guide my decisions. I have a strong value system that helps guide me each day. It helps me prioritize and set the goals and reach them.
2. Foster relationships. Everything I have achieved in life is, in part, attributed to other people. There are so many people in my life that have supported me, challenged me and taught me countless life lessons. As and entrepreneur, a strong network is essential and all relationships matter.
3. Know your weaknesses. Great teams need leaders who are self aware. I believe in knowing my own weaknesses I am better equipped to build and foster a strong collaborative team. It is also important so I don’t waste time on things others are far better suited and will do a better job. It helps me identify what to delegate.
