Host of a BnB in Paris, France – Martinn

Tell us a little something about your business...

From cold cream to crème brûlée.
How to switch from Pharmacy to Hosting a BnB in Paris, France in the Montorgueil area. I was born in Paris, into a family with British and American cousins with parents who always took the time to entertain friends and family visiting from abroad. History and blending cultures have been an important part of our family life . As a young child, I was already showing interest in hosting and cooking and as a teenager and young adult, I began organizing parties and cooking sessions for friends.
Some years later, I was educated as a pharmacist, and this experience taught me to “listen to people”. As a mother, with 3 children, I eventually sold the Pharmacy, moving to the upstate NY for 3 years in the United States. We spent 3 years in a nice community while learning a different culture and at the same time shared my culture and language with adults and young children. We returned to France after 3 wonderful years and my children attended an International school in Paris West where I began to share my English and cooking skills both with French and the International community. At the time, we began to hosted many of our American friends visiting Paris.

When was your lightbulb moment?

It was after my divorce that I accepted a job at the American School of Paris in Saint Cloud Garches, from 2003 to 2006, subbing during school year and teaching French language and culture in Summer classes for young children that I had my lightbulb moment. I soon began to run a 5-bedroom BnB in the South West of France (halfway between Toulouse and Biarritz) from 2007 and 2011 with breakfasts and “Table d’Hôtes” proposing dinners, workshops, cooking classes anbd parties especially during the Marciac International Jazz festival. As luck woud have it, since the end of 2011, I found myself back in Paris and running my own BnB, happy to welcome my guests, with gourmet cuisine and sightseing opportunities through welcoming breakfasts, sharing strolls, exhibitions, gourmet moments.

What are your three words of advice?

Be authentic, be yourself, be sincere, be respectful.
I have found people are looking for a real human relationship!
