How Relationships Make Schools Safer, Dr. Beth J Sanborn
- Contributed By: Dr. Beth J Sanborn
Tell us a little something about your business...
My work has always lived at the intersection of school safety, student well-being, and relationships. As a former police officer and School Resource Officer, I spent years inside schools not just responding to incidents, but building trust with students, supporting families, and helping educators navigate behavior, trauma, and crisis. What I saw, over and over, was a gap in understanding. Schools didn’t always know how to fully use their SRO as a resource, parents were unsure what an SRO’s role truly was, and officers themselves were rarely trained in the educational environment they were stepping into.
That lived experience became the foundation for my work today and ultimately led to my two best-selling books, The Missing Piece and Piecing It Together. Both books were written to translate school safety into human terms. They focus on relationships first, student rights, development, and the idea that safety is built long before a crisis ever occurs. My goal was never to write from an ivory tower, but from the hallway, the cafeteria, the counseling office, and the countless conversations with kids who just needed one adult to see them.
Those books opened doors to national speaking, training, and advocacy, allowing me to work with schools, law enforcement, legislators, and families across the country. At the heart of my business is a simple belief. When we align safety, education, and empathy, we create schools where students can thrive and adults can truly make a difference.
When was your lightbulb moment?
My lightbulb moment came during the school day, not in a crisis. Fellow police officers were walking the halls of my school to learn the layout, and they immediately noticed something that stopped them in their tracks. Students were smiling at them. Saying hello. Engaging comfortably.
That hadn’t always been the case. Before I became the School Resource Officer, police presence in schools often felt foreign to students. It created anxiety, curiosity, and distance. Officers were seen as outsiders, not trusted adults.
One of the sergeants pulled me aside and asked, “What are you doing to those kids?” When I asked what he meant, he explained that the students were clearly more receptive to law enforcement and viewed officers in a positive light. Then he said something I’ll never forget: “Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.”
That was the moment it clicked. Proactive, positive relationship-building isn’t soft work. It’s foundational work. When students feel seen and safe with the adults in their building, everything changes. Trust grows, anxiety drops, and safety becomes something we build every day, not just respond to when something goes wrong.
What are your three words of advice?
Smile.
A smile is disarming. It signals safety, approachability, and humanity. In schools especially, smiling is contagious. It lowers defenses, invites conversation, and reminds students and adults alike that you are there with them, not over them.
Listen.
Everyone has a story, and every behavior has a backstory. Listening shows respect and curiosity. It allows people to feel seen and heard, often for the first time. When we listen without rushing to fix or judge, we build trust and open doors to understanding that policies alone never could.
Connect.
Connection is where real impact happens. Relationships are the foundation of safety, learning, and growth. When we intentionally connect, through presence, consistency, and care, we create environments where people feel valued and supported. Connection turns systems into communities and transforms roles into relationships.
