Leadership Self Talk, Brian P Swift JD

Tell us a little something about your business...

I was emceeing my first big management conference—lights, executives, tight agenda, real stakes. My coworkers, who were also friends, kept joking about me messing up names, missing cues, or freezing on stage, and I laughed it off like it wasn’t landing. I told myself it wasn’t on my mind, but as I stepped backstage, I could feel that quiet hum of doubt running just beneath my confidence.
That’s when I recognized the familiar trap: the self-talk that sounds harmless and even protective. It’s just jokes. They don’t mean anything by it. Now isn’t the right time to say something. Just like leaders who want accountability but avoid hard conversations, I was choosing comfort over clarity, telling myself I didn’t want to make it awkward or strain relationships before a big moment.
But that unspoken noise followed me onto the stage, subtly pulling at my focus and presence. It reminded me that accountability doesn’t break relationships—it strengthens them, when handled with honesty. The moment I owned the impact of that self-talk, I reclaimed my footing, realizing that leadership starts with confronting what we quietly tolerate, both in others and in ourselves.

When was your lightbulb moment?

My lightbulb moment happened backstage, just before I stepped on stage, when I started making mistakes and recognized the familiar self-talk for what it was. It was the instant I connected coworkers’ jokes to the same quiet avoidance pattern leaders use—realizing that what I was dismissing as “nothing” was actually influencing my focus, confidence, and accountability. I remembered saying, just stay in the moment, be present and everything will be good.

What are your three words of advice?

Commitment matters because it keeps you moving forward when motivation fades and challenges arise. It’s the bridge between intention and results.
Integrity matters because it builds trust with others and alignment within yourself. When your actions match your values, your life gains credibility and peace.
Attitude matters because it shapes how you interpret circumstances and respond to adversity. A strong attitude turns obstacles into opportunities and effort into growth.
