Tell us a little something about your business...
My 30’s started off with a bang. I was building a solid reputation at a large pharma company and had earned two promotions in as many years. I was a newlywed and expecting our first child. I had success in every part of my life and the sky was the limit! It was exhilarating. Then unexpectedly, a cancer diagnosis for my husband drastically changed my life journey. For six years, I cared for him and our two infant sons while continuing my career in pharma. It didn’t slow me down. I earned several promotions during that time and even started another business in my local community. It was a hell of a journey, personally and professionally, with many lessons learned along the way, including a depression diagnosis and burnout. After my husband passed in 2009, I knew these lessons needed to be formulated into a meaningful message, but the timing wasn’t right. I needed to focus on raising the boys and that meant I needed my corporate career to be the financial foundation for us. The book had to wait.
When was your lightbulb moment?
Fast forward to 2017. By this time, I was happily remarried, had started my own consulting company and the boys were turning into young men. The time was right. I had 17 years of leadership experience under my belt along with the scars of grief and loss. I tapped into my creative spirit and developed a model of how I thought workplace cultures should be. I called it the Purposeful Workplace Experience and it was the framework for the book. We need to change the way we work – for ourselves, our families, our friends and our planet. This book was my way of amplifying this message using my own experience.
A few short years later, the global pandemic shifted the perspective of many personally and professionally. It forced me to reflect and consider the meaning and purpose of my work. Did I truly love what I was doing? Was it bringing sustainable change? The result was rebranding to carolynswora.com and taking a bold stand to differentiate my work as a human spirit ignitor. Fall 2022 will mark the release of my second book, this one being a memoir and how I ignited my own spirit.
What are your three words of advice?
My advice to emerging entrepreneurs is simple…
