Author, Lynn McLaughlin Co.

Tell us a little something about your business...

I retired after 31 years as an educator serving many roles: french and special education teacher, school principal and superintendent of education. I grappled with what to do with my newfound freedom for almost a year, jumping from here to there. In December 2019, I found my “why” and launched Lynn McLaughlin Co. It has been a whirlwind jumping into the world of entrepreneur but I’ve loved every minute. I am now proud to say I am an award winning author and helping writers find their way through the complicated world of publishing, promotion and marketing through my four part interactive, online series, “Time to Publish”. When professional speaking opportunities were cancelled due to the pandemic, I launched a podcast, “Taking the Helm” where we meet incredible individuals who have taken crisis and turned it into new possibilities for their lives and/or business. It’s truly celebratory and an honour to bring their voices to the forefront.

When was your lightbulb moment?

July 14th, 2013. I had been ignoring symptoms for far too long. After having an MRI, I was sent immediately to the emergency department of the hospital. Alone, time literally stopped when I heard the words, “I’m sorry to tell you. You have a brain tumour”. Needless to say, the next year brought a multitude of emotional and physical trauma as I worked through treatment options and choices. The effect my illness had on my family cannot be minimized. It was truly a year that changed our perspectives about what we take for granted, what we now cherish and what doesn’t matter in the least!

What are your three words of advice?

1. Laugh – Be with people who bring humour into your life and give it back to them. It helps to minimize fear. It’s cathartic and uplifting in the worst of times.
2. Perspective – when you look in the mirror and wonder if your life is about to end, MANY things that seemed important suddenly become trivial. They don’t matter in the least. Don’t wait for time to stop to gain perspective.
3. Positivity – One can wallow and feel sorry for oneself, but in the end they are doing themselves a detriment. Finding something to hang your hat on, people that bring joy, seeing possibilities to open doors, taking baby steps forward – that’s the way to take on anything that is thrown at you.

Laugh…Perspective…Positivity
