Tell us a little something about your business...

Hi I’m Elizabeth, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) at Upstream Counselling. You can call me Liza.

I have been fortunate to have spent the last 10 years working in international travel, both guiding and hosting others. My appreciation of our shared human diversity and beauty, stems from the many different cultures I have been fortunate to work, with in different parts of the world. I have gained experience working with single mothers in Kibera Kenya, while my own experience as a mother and step mother, has been valuable as I learned to nurture healthy relationships within our blended family. I work with an integrated approach that considers post modern styles such as narrative therapy and solution focused brief therapy. My belief is that individuals construct meaning in their lives from the dialogue they have with others and the language used in their cultures and societies.

Navigating tough decisions or unexpected changes can leave us feeling lost and unsure. We each hold a unique worldview and in therapy, we can explore how this unique lens affects how you view yourself, and others. When we understand ourselves better, we are better equipped to address unhelpful thinking patterns and/or behaviours that may be negatively impacting our lives.

Whether you are struggling with depression or anxiety, life transitions, or perhaps you are struggling to find your place in an ever-changing uncertain world, therapy can help you find a way to move forward. My belief is that we have the capacity to change our thinking, behaviour, and actions in a way that leads us to a greater sense of holistic wellbeing.

If you are seeking greater understanding of your identity, values, and beliefs, and hoping to make deeper connections with others, please reach out today, and together we can find the right path for you.

When was your lightbulb moment?

The concept of ikigai is something I began to think more about, especially during the COVID 19 pandemic, when our usual way of living began to drastically change.
Ikigai is said to have evolved from the basic health and wellness principles of traditional Japanese medicine. This tradition holds that physical wellbeing is affected by one’s mental–emotional health and sense of purpose in life. It is both a personal pursuit and one of benefit to others.
Essentially, ikigai brings meaning, purpose, and fulfillment to your life, while also contributing to the good of others. It is the concept of of :
1. Doing something you love
2. Doing something you are good at
3. Doing something the world needs
4. Doing something that you can earn a living from
I found that a career in psychotherapy for me meet all 4 of the criteria above, and this was my lightbulb moment.

What are your three words of advice?

Honesty – this is important to ensure you are living within your values.
Openness – take the time to understand a different point of view than your own. There’s always something to learn from others.
Kindness – this is a super power. When we are kind to others and ourselves we learn compassion. Compassion can soften and change hearts.

Three words of advice...

Authenticity – Creativity – Honesty
