Tell us a little something about your business...
With over a decade of experience in the digital content space, I was looking for a new opportunity to build my own brand after consulting for others for a few years. At that time there was a trend stirring in the US of non-traditional news sources providing readers with a more casual, conversational take on world issues. As someone who had a disdain for news, and with my experience, I decided to seize the opportunity. And that’s how The Bullet was born!
When was your lightbulb moment?
I branched out with my own entrepreneurial venture in 2004 with the launch of my first digital business, Sweetspot.ca. It was a perfect storm of (again) seeing a US model (Daily Candy) and realizing there was a gap in the Canadian market, along with feeling like I wasn’t feeling challenged or rewarded in my career, which was in advertising.
What are your three words of advice?
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart (or mind). You will get knocked down, demoralized, depressed and doubt yourself, but you have to take the punches and keep going. Organization – I’ve never seen a successful entrepreneur who was disorganized. Keep your affairs in order (bookkeeping, emails, processes, etc) and you’ll have that much greater of a chance of success (and less aggravation). Humour – don’t take yourself so seriously! As the Indigo Girls say, “it’s only life, after all.”
