The Deal We Lost to Doing Nothing, Art Fromm

Tell us a little something about your business...

Closed – Won. We had it. Strong solution fit. Executive access. A clear business case. Confirmed the “technical win.”
The kind of deal that shows up in the forecast as committed, with little debate. The client told us they liked what they saw. And then… it disappeared.

No competitor. No dramatic objection. Just silence – followed by the slow, awful truth:   They stayed exactly where they were. After a few honest conversations, the pattern became clear.

What mattered wasn’t that we had a great solution. It was whether the client believed the value of change outweighed the risk and cost of moving forward.

We answered their questions.
We demonstrated capabilities.
We checked every box.

They even said they loved it.

But we spent our time proving why our solution was good, even great… and not enough time helping them confront why staying the same was unacceptable. We didn’t achieve a true “Technical Close,” so we were never going to get to a “Business Close.” We didn’t change how they saw their situation.

No urgency.
No real consequences.
No reason to move.

So when it came time to decide, the safest choice wasn’t us. It wasn’t a competitor. It was doing nothing.  And this isn’t rare. Half – or more – of supposedly qualified deals end this way. Quietly. Late. Forecasts get distorted. Pipelines look healthier than they are. And teams are left wondering what they missed.  Meanwhile, the client is still putting up with their issue. The hard truth: Coming up with the solution – your offer – is the easy part.  Understanding how your client decides – and treating doing nothing as a real competitor – that’s where deals are actually won or lost.

So what’s the best use of your time on your next opportunity? Happy to share more insights to compel you, too, to not do nothing.

When was your lightbulb moment?

Winning isn’t about being better than the competition or having a great solution.
It’s about finding out and aligning with the client’s needs – alleviating pain or achieving gain – personal and business.
It’s about helping the client realize that “do nothing” is riskier and costlier than moving forward.

What are your three words of advice?

Create urgency first.
Because otherwise you’re guessing, hoping, pushing, selling.
Focusing on the other person’s needs turns engagement from a push to a pull and a sell to a buy.
Help them see that the status quo isn’t a viable outcome.

Three words of advice...

Disrupt. Clarify. Advance.
