The Period Poverty Project, Florence Kayungwa

Tell us a little something about your business...

I am a fundraiser who is fighting period poverty in rural areas of Zimbabwe where 2 in every 5 girl miss five or more days of school per month due to shortage of feminine products to take care of their periods. This is motivated by my personal experience I suffered period poverty and shame, I am now raising a voice on that issue so that no one has to chose between education and her periods. My motto is that we need to keep girls in classroom because educated girls are more likely to make informed decisions and this is in line with United Nations sustainable development goals.

When was your lightbulb moment?

My light bulb moment was when my mentor Dr Trent asked me what breaks your heart, I reflected on my life and I found out that I suffered period poverty and shame. Her follow up question was so what are you doing about it, that’s when I decided to act because if you sit on a question the answer will find you.

What are your three words of advice?

1) Let girls learn, so that we can achieve gender parity
2) periods and mensturators are not dirty, it’s normal because the bible quaran and other religious books labelled menstruation as diety thats why we face discrimination everyday.
3) if you are privileged to have access to feminine products consider helping those who do not so  they will menstruate with dignity.
