After getting a double major in Chinese Studies and Economics from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, in 1995, I moved to China and worked as a contracted diplomat, project developer in the energy sector, and Vice President of an international boutique investment bank and earned an MBA along the way. In 2006 I moved back to Canada to work alongside my father as an investment advisor and helped over 500 Canadian families implement The Smith Manoeuvre. Turn Your Mortgage Into Your Biggest Asset, Robinson Smith

Tell us a little something about your business...

My father, Fraser, developed The Smith Manoeuvre back in the mid-1980’s which is a personal financial strategy that enables Canadians to generate tax deductions, eliminate their mortgage much quicker than otherwise, and build up a significant investment portfolio without requiring any additional cash flow on a monthly basis. I worked alongside my father as a financial advisor from 2006 and helped Canadian homeowners implement the strategy for a dozen years until I sold my practice to write my book, Master Your Mortgage for Financial Freedom, which hit #1 in 22 categories on Amazon on launch day November 2019. Since then I have been educating Canadians on the strategy and training and certifying Smith Manoeuvre Certified Professionals across Canada to assist these homeowners implement The Smith Manoeuvre.

When was your lightbulb moment?

As an investment advisor, I was educating Canadian homeowners one family at a time across a desk and it occurred to me in 2018 that since what was most important to me was helping as many Canadians as possible to secure their financial future, the best way to do that was to sell my advisory so that I would have the time to not only write a book on the strategy, but spend my time in front of as many Canadians as possible. To date I have spoken to thousands of Canadians through various podcasts, interviews, webinars and training sessions and The Smith Manoeuvre is being mentioned in the Financial Post, Globe & Mail, and other publications.

What are your three words of advice?

“Just Do It” – unlike some (most?) people, I made the decision to sell my practice, write the book, and create a training program for financial professionals without putting much thought into it – I just knew it was what I had to do. Without putting too much consideration as to how I would accomplish my goal of educating Canadians and training professionals, after selling my practice I was forced to figure it out. If I had not leapt I would not have accomplished what I have. Sometimes burning bridges is the only way to build better ones.
