Wonderland Interactive Storytelling – Cathrin Blickling

Tell us a little something about your business...

Wonderland Interactive Storytelling is a program for 3-5 year olds. It develops a child’s social, emotional and communication skills through story and play. This teaching program come with a stories, games and puppets and has been used world wide in different kindergartens and school settings. The program is all inclusive no matter what background one is from, if English is a child’s second language or if a child is gifted. It brings a group together, taking them all on an adventure, solving problems together, creating magical places and being the hero of the story. I have watched children develop skills, grow and really come out of their shell through these adventures and the best thing is, they love it and want to do it over and over. I am also excited to be publishing the first picture book for Wonderland in the next few months!

When was your lightbulb moment?

Wonderland Interactive Storytelling was established in Vienna. I had been working with children and adults for the past 10 years and I was worried to be witnessing just how many people were struggling with vital skills. Life skills that would allow anyone to thrive in their personal life and career. These are social, emotional and communication skills. What worried me the most was that children were starting my workshops with less and less of these skills, which was strange as some of these should have been coming naturally to kids including playing and coming up with their own imaginative ideas. When a school came to me and asked me if I had anything for the 3-5 year olds, I realised that there was a huge gap in the market; most drama classes only began from the age of 5 upwards. This was the start of Wonderland Interactive Storytelling. It took about a term to get the concept completely developed. What started with a class of 8 children, quickly grew into completely booked workshops with teachers also getting me into their classroom to develop this program around their curriculum. It was amazing to watch the children develop and grow so quickly impacting not only their school work but also their social life.

What are your three words of advice?

Wonder, Play and Thrive.
Wonder – It is so important to still ask questions, to still think about things and to not take everything for granted. This is what keeps us young, what keeps us alive and what helps us create.
Play – No matter how old or what job one has, it is so important to play. It’s like laughing and it is what keeps us fresh and is very de-stressing.
Thrive – I choose this word more as a reminder. A reminder to follow your dreams, to go for it and to remember that one is allowed to be happy. Thrive in your personal life as well as your career. This means there does need to be a balance in life but the word is also there to remind to not stop yourself and to be daring. Give it a go and don’t let fear or self doubt get in the way.
