All it takes is passion and discipline, Ronald N Maina

Tell us a little something about your business...

I am a second-generation family business manager working under the founder/patriarch for 12 years. The business is an ICT reseller outfit partnering with global brands to fulfil various technological solutions for banks, governments, and manufacturing within the continent.

At the inception of his working career, the founder was a trained electrical graduate keen to perform his job to the best of his abilities. As fate would have it, he found himself working in a global company that allowed him to build his skills, learn about business and gain invaluable experience in selling. From employee to employer and today, the business is more than 30 years old.

Testament of a journey that took a passion for continuing despite the ups and downs.

When was your lightbulb moment?

My lightbulb moment came about during an election period in our country. The veracity with which politicians “fought” to either retain an existing seat or defeat an incumbent reminded me of transitioning leadership. Are entrepreneurs fighting as hard every five years to ensure they leave a seat in trained hands?
I have been privileged to sit on the founder’s side for the last 10 years and am still trying to understand him, his vision and his legacy. What is evident from his approach to doing business is that it seems effortless to do the basic things on repeat mode every week. A routine of being first into the office every working day has been one of his discipline traits.

What are your three words of advice?

To be resilient you need to do the basics very well. Discipline becomes much easier if you do what you love. Why? Because to ensure success in handing over to the next-gen, you cannot tire of inviting them, training them, being an exemplar and more.

Three words of advice...

Resilience comes from being disciplined at what you love.
