Innovation and Commitment To Your Community

Building Sanctuaries for the Modern World

Welcome to the Share Your Stories series in support of the entrepreneurial spirit…

We feature stories of ordinary people, just like you and me, who are doing extra ordinary things, connecting with their communities and pursuing their own brand of success.

In our gig economy, we need to encourage business innovation because every new company starts out as an incubator business. Every successful entrepreneur has had a mentor with a support network and each business mogul will remember the days when they started in the trenches with a great idea.

Each person who shares their story has been on a journey that started with a lightbulb moment, taking a leap of faith to start a business and share their great idea…

Aaron Miller is Founder and CEO of Hummingbirdhill Homes + Construction Inc.  They are not your ordinary custom home builder.  Aaron and his team have a totally different approach, they build fine architecture that enhances your capacity to thrive!

Aaron has taken his background in business and partnered with Ian MacFayden who holds a Red Seal in Carpentry, creating a company with a vision:

“We build environments that maximize your capacity to thrive.”

Two individuals who have a made a commitment to changing the build environment for your custom home to include sustainability and your family’s health.

HummingbirdHill Homes + Construction Inc is one of the only companies in Canada that are both PassiveHouse™ + WELL™ Certified Builder.

What does that mean?

A PassiveHouse is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, which reduces the building’s ecological footprint. The WELL Building Standard® is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment that impact human health and wellbeing, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind. Combine this efficiency with creating an environment that promotes wellness and you have a winning combination.

Aaron is passionate about finding a better way to build homes that are sustainable for healthy living while taking into consideration the footprint in the environment.  He and his team consider all of the construction materials available on the market and discuss the options with clients who share the same vision.

At the same time, they take a transparent and collaborative approach. Introducing a project management system that allows each customer to be actively engaged in the process. The best tool  for clients is the owner’s very own dedicated HHH builder app accessible from clients’ phones, tablets, or computers anywhere in the world that communicates project information in real time.  Tracking the progress of their project while keeping up-to-date allows for happy, well informed customers.

They have a great tagline:  Built to Thrive!

This describes how their process connects each client with the elements in nature and maximizes all of the five human senses for the health and wellness of each family.

They have introduced a three step process for each home:

  1. Consultation and Plan
  2. Management and Build
  3. Support and Thrive

Communication is key!

Collaborating with innovative architectural designers, trades, and suppliers provides options for each project so that customers are introduced to materials that will not only enhance the visual appeal of their home but create its personalty based on lifestyle.

It is definitely a team effort!

There are so many craftsman involved in each project who contribute many man hours, so collaboration and teamwork are key components to their ongoing success. Each custom home includes a team of individuals who are committed to working towards a common goal – an outstanding piece of architecture that introduces each family to their neighbourhood and
connects them to the community.

When you speak with Arron, he will tell you that regardless of introducing state of the art technology, the fundamentals of family living are still the same and everyone still congregates in the kitchen! There is nothing more rewarding than hearing about the first family gathering with traditional recipes, good food, great company and lots of laughter.

It’s what memories are made of!

“We hired Hummingbird Hill for our new custom build in SE Oakville. We spoke with a number of other builders but we didn’t feel the same level of trust and comfort that we had after meeting with Aaron. From start to finish, the entire Hummingbird team was a pleasure to work with. Great communication, transparency and attention to detail throughout the build. Their trades were also excellent and very professional. With this being our first build, Aaron and team were readily accessible to answer questions in order for us to make educated and informed decisions. The project always felt in control, which made the experience enjoyable and surprisingly stress free! Most importantly, we absolutely love the end result.” Eileen and Al Quong

Here are a few highlights on Aaron’s story…

1) Tell us a little something about your business …

We are a home builder focused on delivering another level of professionalism in all aspects of the building experience but with a passion and commitment towards meaningful sustainability methods and materials and the interaction our built environment has on our health & wellness.

2)      When was your lightbulb moment?

My lightbulb moment occurred while I was renting a house for one year while renovating our family home. Although the home we rented was newly renovated, it was evident it was poorly constructed with very little natural light, a consistent smell (that we figured out was the result of material off gassing), and had rooms (including the master bedroom) that were uncomfortably cold during the winter due to poor insulation. My ‘ah-ha’ moment was when I realized how much living in this house impacted my mood, my interactions with my family, my energy levels, and even my physical health. It literally caused me to be unhealthy living there. After much research, I realized that studies are beginning to show that the environments we live and work in have a direct impact on our physical health, moods, energy and stress levels, and even how productive we are at home and at work. I set out to change how we build and share the knowledge I have gained to help educate others as well so that we can maximize our collective ability to thrive!

3) Three words of advice…

Persistence… Passion… Empathy
